Amish White Bread
This is a classic Amish White Bread we like and very easy to do. It tastes great with homemade vegetable or superb for toasting with apple butter!
Ingredients
- 1 cup warm water temp should be about 110 degree F
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 2 1/4 tsp yeast active dry yeast or 2 tsp bread machine yeast
- 3/4 tsp salt
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 3 cups flour all purpose or bread flour
Instructions
- In a small glass bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Gently stir until thoroughly mixed and let it sit anywhere from 10- 30 min. This is called proofing yeast. Bubbly foam with be on top of the water and the yeast is ready to use
- In the meantime, measure salt and vegetable oil and place in a big bowl
- Add the yeast mixture and gently stir together
- Slowly add one cup of flour one at a time until the dough is holding together and the ball is only slightly sticky and sides of bowl are clean
- Knead until smooth and a small ball of dough passes the window pane test.
- Place your dough in slightly oiled bowl, turning the dough a few times to oil all sides and cover with greased saran wrap.
- Set the bowl in a warm draft free place and let it rise until double in size. (1 -1 1/2 hours)
- Punch dough down.
- Turn your dough onto a floured surface, form into a ball and let it rest for 5 min
- Shape your loaf and place in sprayed grease bread pan. Cover with greased plastic wrap again and let rise in pan until it is higher than 1 inch of pan
- Preheat oven 350 degrees
- Bake for about 30 min or until loaf is done.
- Remove from pan and cool on rack.
